Capturing Dad

Capturing dad was the wonderful movie I saw on the final day of film festival and that movie made my day. The Japanese movie stole the heart of many people including me. It was the story of a divorce woman who is a lottery seller, raises her two girls in full value of life. She decides to send them to watch their dad in his bed dying of cancer. The only thing she told her daughters was to take a photograph of her dying father. The girls were told that their mother want to see the expression on their fathers face when dying. The movie progress through the girl’s journey to the dads place without knowing their father is dead. But nothing affects the girls in an emotional way because they were not so acquainted with their dad. The girls see it as a pleasure trip to capture the photograph of their dad. The elder sister sees it as an opportunity to be an adult. But she has to confront family issues and the burial of a man who is barely known to them, she handles the situation really well thou. The meeting of the  girls with their half brother Chihiro was really wonderful and cute. Chihiro bagged the attention and love of every viewer.

The casting of the movie adds to the success of the movie. Despite of that I personally felt that the director could have captured the funeral house and the emotions within the family and between the distant relatives in much more expressive way. I felt it very flat apart from the performance of our two girls and Chihiro. There is a detached irony throughout the movie. It portrays death and loss in a very cheerful way. The ending of the movie was also wonderful which connects the tuna fish irony. There was no other better way to end the movie in an astonishing way.

The Hunt

The hunt is such a good movie which steels our mind through its different subject and flow of narration. The beginning of the movie is in a usual way with full of warmth, pleasure, happiness and harmony but when the tale precedes its track changes to suspicion, sorrow, and pain. Lucas is the main character of the film and the whole story revolves around him and his friends, family and acquaintances. The story is all about the innocent man Lucas and how is he haunted and tortured by dear ones and society of the sin which he has not done. He loses his every good relationship just because of a single but serious lie by his best friend’s daughter. The movie portrays how a lie gets its acceptance and how society take it and how it spreads around and then become a truth by the end of the day. And how an innocent man is hunted by the society family and friends.

The director Thomas Vinterberg portrayed the deep emotions of every character in an appreciable way and he had given lot of instances in the movie to make the viewer think about the story instead of spoon feeding the audience by telling the story in a flat narrative style. The hunting sequence of Lucas with his friends and son in the deep woods by the end of the story smartly tells the audience that even after years the innocent Lucas is been hunted by the society. The technical aspect of the movie kept some standard and the whole movie looked good and the pace of the story were impeccable

The rocket

The rocket was one of the movies in the festival which was very different in narration techniques. It handled a very serious subject through the eyes of a small toddler. Rocket was a very different movie experience. It opens the basic needs and problems and superstitions of common men. It is a lovely texture of culture and how a boy overcomes the chaos he has to face. So the movie is not only a feel good affair but also of something significant to say.
Kim Mordaunt created this movie as a crowd puller. It showed a part of world which is not seen by most eastern people. The jungles of Laos were a new experience for me.

It has a great story to tell and subtly mixes the comic and dramatic genres. Some moment will leave you smiling and other moments will put you at the edge of your seats. The movie got a very energetic to keep the audience delighted. The director effectively captured the cultural background of the Laos people. It is a compassionate movie for a protagonist. And a must watch movie.

Vara a blessing

Vara a blessing the Bhutanese film directed by  Khyentse Norbu was a visual and musical treat. The movie was like a visual painting which holds a sound of ethnic karnatic music. It was a like a beautiful garden on screen. The concept of Krishna and Radha is well indulged in this movie. It is a tale of forbidden love. The story line of the movie is ages old and was told many times but the visualization of the movie is in such a way that no one with a good aesthetic sense will took their eyes off from the screen, it was that serene. It is the tale of forbidden love between a dev dasi dancer girl and a low-caste sculptor. The movie conveys the idea, love is ever lasting. The movie also shows the Indian village culture and cast and tradition in early ages.
The story flows throw the major characters Laila the dev dasi girl who is a Krishna devotee and dedicated entire life for Lord Krishna, who is also a classical trained dancer and singer. Laila is in love with Syam the sculptor and backward cast young man. The son of the village chief is also in love with Laila. The movie shows the helpless and confused life of a dev dasi girl using the Krishna effect. That is the back bone of the movie in every sense.

The movie was so crisp and well trimmed there was no excess of shots or scenes which would have spoiled the beauty and rhythm of the entire movie. Laila was very much safe in the hands of Shahana Goswami. She did her part well. The portrayal of Indian cultural ages in ties with the Indian music dance and beautiful visuals made the movie a wonderful poem. This movie added a lot of colours and emotions in my mind.

The Coffin maker

Coffin maker was my ever favourite Indian movie in the 18th international film festival. It was such an excellent movie. I am a great fan of Nazzruedin Shah and I was fully satisfied after watching the movie. The Veena Bhakshi movie entertained almost every audience despite of age and class. It was such a joy to watch the innocence of each and every character in this movie. The movie was simple with lot of fun and logic. Nazzruedin Shah just lived as the character. The theme  story line, plot and the screen play was very different and enticing.
The scent of magical realism adds more fragrance to the coffin maker, a sweet tale about an old man who came to know that he has only one month to live, who himself is a coffin maker. The beautiful backdrop of Goa makes the movie more pleasing and wonderful. The movie goes with the audience through a character called Allou who carries the tale all along till the end.
The movie tries to say the life is a beautiful thing and everyone should enjoy it at its fullest and love is such an important thing.

It was one of the Indian movies which got real appreciation. The local English dialect used in the film keeps it more fresh and full of humour even though there was less music. The amusing English and the geographical backgrounds give a Caribbean relaxed feeling to the audience. Even though it is filled with wit and humour at times the tale gets its wings of emotion and heart touching situations which made the audience heart heavy. The supporting roles of colourful but stereotyped villagers were so impressive especially the lonely anxious widow. It was the first time in my life to witness the whole theatre crowds gave a standing ovation to the director Veena Bhakshi, it itself showed the quality of the movie. Even I managed to have her autograph in the back of a cigarette packet(I didn't had any other slips with me thou). It was the only movie I managed to watch twice and recommend to all my friends and acquaintances. I was wondering that how come this movie was not there in the competition category.

Lucia

Lucia is a Kannada movie directed by Pawan Kumar and was an excellent psychological thriller. I actually had a prejudiced mind about Kannada movies because the ninety percent of Kannada movies I watched was full of nonsense and stardom, and all those movies doesn’t had a logic. This one was an exceptional one even in the making and in the story line as well. The whole credit deserves to Pawan Kumar because his direction skill and writing skill is the back bone of the movie.  The funding of the movie was from the people through face book and such social media sites he just kept the pride of each contributors very high.
Lucia is a good movie in technical aspects too. The unconventional way of storytelling gave a different fragrance to the movie. This movie does not satisfy the audience who seek for entertainment but it is a very good thriller. The story revolves around the hero Nikki who works in the movie talkies owned by Sankaranna. Nikki is addicted to an illegal tablet named Lucia which not only give sound sleep but also provide dreams feels like real life and one can watch it in episodes. Nikki is also in an affair with a girl works in pizza hut named Swetha. In another track there is a police team along with a high profile detective to solve some illegal drug cases. It seems like the director to be inspired from western or American movies or a remake of English movies.
I personally felt that the movie is too long, the director could have cut down or trim down at least 10 or 15 minutes from the movie to avoid audience losing their patience in the climax. The movie express a great  thought that every common man has a dream to be famous and busy man with a facilitated life and every facilitated people have a dream to lead a common man’s life. It is worth watching the movie Lucia.

El Emigrante

El emigrante is a movie directed by Mario Cardona. It was the first movie I watched in street film making category. It was a fifteen minute short movie, which narrates all about the arrival of the hero ‘Omar’ to a new city running away from something serious, some serious trouble. He was really  concerned about his family and was totally devastated. He is trying to hide from someone and was not able to get contact with his family. At the pub he meets Julia and by that time he was revealed the drastic tragedy occurred to his family , but there was no turn back.
It was just a shot movie full of drama and tension, but I loved it for its making. The craft of the movie was so good. The shots used and the cinematography was very nice and it meets up international standard and class. It was visually very nice. What I learned from watching this movie is that, if I ever make an effort to make a shot film or documentary I have two choices either to convey it through normal visuals or to make it good with nice screen play and good shots and better cinematography

Television

The movie television was wonderful and so entertaining and won the heart of all spectators by its simple narration and enticing performance of the actors in it. Television holds up the new experiments and standard of Bangladeshi film industry. I personally loved the simplicity of the movie and the way it handled a serious subject in a funny way without hurting anyone’s emotions. The director Mostofa Sarwar Farooqui got special appreciation from many international film festivals for the very unique and interesting plot of the movie. I am sure that this film will take the Bangladeshi movie to a new level.
Television took me for a rollercoaster ride full of fun , emotions and logic, it was the performance of the actors keeps the movie awesome. The main theme of  the story ; bringing a television to a remote village full of its own traditions blocked round by water. The village chief doesn’t allow even a news paper in the village to spread without photo editing. He is all against the new technologies because he believes that the post modern inventions like television , mobile phone and internet will absolutely spoil the young generation and keeps them away from reading and there by the evil will get their hands on them.
The move shows the very fact that in one way or another people cant get away from being in touch with the technology. It also says there is pros and cons in everything and we should use the good intention of every technologies. The director beautifully conveys this aspects by showing the village chief is been cheated by visa agency people and he couldn’t go to Hajj. His only choice was to watch it on television which he hated most and he realized the importance of technologies and modern media.
The ideological differences between the young people and old people of  the village was portrayed excellently. The triangular love story in the movie added more colors to the movie. The intervention of technology in the love affair of hero and heroine was shown in a really hilarious and wonderful way by the incline of situation humor.
The only thing I found negative was the cinematography. They could have done it better. Apart from this they handled the bold subject which has international acceptance in an easy simple and beautiful way. It is one of my personal favorite among the iffk films.
